In Brown's flight was a new and inexperience fellow Canadian, W. R. May from Edmonton, who attended the same school as Brown. Following infantry service, Wilfrid 'Wop' May became a pilot and was posted to 209 in April 1918. Attacked by the Red Baron, May showed considerable skill by flying low and from side to side, although if the Baron's guns had been working properly there is no doubt he would have been shot down. Surviving this day he went on to be awarded the DFC, was credited with thirteen victories and survived the war. He died in June 1952,
