III of Mercedes D.III-lijnmotor, waarvan het vermogen van 112 of 119 kW (150 of 160 pk) de installatie van twee kanonnen mogelijk maakte zonder dat dit ten koste ging van de hoge prestaties van het gevechtsvliegtuig. Het type werd al snel in gebruik genomen en bleek in alle belangrijke opzichten superieur te zijn aan de huidige geallieerde gevechtsvliegtuigen. De enige kritiek op het type was de plaats van de bovenste vleugel, die het zicht van de piloot naar boven belemmerde. In de definitieve D.II werd de vleugel verlaagd, de D.III-motor gestandaardiseerd en in latere vliegtuigen werden de radiatoren in de vorm van oren in de romp vervangen door een gestroomlijnde radiator in het midden van de bovenste vleugel.
