Het resultaat was de D.III, die de romp en staartvlakken van de D.II behield, maar werd uitgerust met een versie van de D.III-motor met een hogere compressieverhouding voor iets meer vermogen, en een nieuwe vleugelcel zonder verspringing. De vleugels bestonden uit een bovenvleugel met een grotere spanwijdte en schuine uiteinden en een ondervleugel met een smalle koorde in een sesquiplane-opstelling met V-vormige tussenvleugelsteunen. Tegelijkertijd werd de radiator verplaatst van het middengedeelte naar de rechtervleugel, zodat een kogelinslag niet zou leiden tot verbranding van de piloot. De D.III kwam in het voorjaar van 1917 in dienst en werd in grote aantallen geproduceerd om tussen die tijd en het najaar van datzelfde jaar de beslissende jager boven het westelijk front te worden.
