De Dr.I was ge\u00efnspireerd op de Sopwith Triplane, maar voerde het triplane-concept tot het uiterste door door het vleugeloppervlak te maximaliseren en de totale spanwijdte te minimaliseren. De Dr.I, ontworpen door Reinhold Platz, had een rotatiemotor, een romp van stalen buizen en vrijwel vrijdragende vleugels van hout met een bekleding van multiplex aan de voorzijde.
