Ondanks zijn slechte prestaties en matige eendekkerconstructie (afgeleid van zijn onbewapende voorganger, de M.5k) was het uitgerust met een machinegeweer dat recht naar voren kon vuren door de propeller, dankzij 's werelds eerste praktische onderbreker. De E.I (waarvan er maar een paar werden gebouwd) had te weinig vermogen en werd opgevolgd door de E.II met meer vermogen (23 gebouwd) en vervolgens door de definitieve E.III (tussen de 120 en 150 gebouwd) met dezelfde motor maar een aantal detailverbeteringen. Dit was het vliegtuig van de \u2018Fokker Scourge\u2019 uit 1915\/16, waarin deze arme vliegtuigen de overhand hadden vanwege hun bewapening en de vaardigheid van hun piloten. Ontwikkelingen bij de geallieerden leidden tot de E.IV met twee kanonnen en meer vermogen, maar deze miste elke echte wendbaarheid.
