Het had een monocoque romp met een buitenhuid van twee lagen dunne multiplexstroken die onder een hoek ten opzichte van elkaar waren geplaatst (bekend als een Wickelrumpf, of \u2018omwikkelde romp\u2019). De diepe romp vulde de verticale opening tussen de middensecties van de vleugelpanelen volledig op, waardoor de cabane-steunen die vaak in tweedekkers werden gebruikt, overbodig werden en het vliegtuig zijn bijnaam \u201cwalvis\u201d kreeg. De steunen en kabels werden verminderd, zonder dat dit ten koste ging van het gewicht van de cantilevervleugels, zoals die werden gebruikt op de baanbrekende volledig metalen Junkers J 1 van eind 1915. Er werd zelfs geprobeerd om de vleugels in de romp te integreren om dode luchtruimte te elimineren, een kenmerk dat opvallend ontbrak bij de deelnemers aan de Schneider Trophy van het volgende decennium. De ingenieur die verantwoordelijk was voor het ontwerp was Tantzen, een leerling van Ludwig Prandtl, de grondlegger van de wiskundige aerodynamica en degene die het concept van de grenslaag introduceerde.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The C.II entered service in the spring of 1916. Operationally, handling was reported as difficult but performance was relatively good. Due to the crew positions with eyes above the upper wing, upward visibility was excellent, but downward visibility was poor. It was also used in a fighter escort role and had a crew of two, pilot and observer\/gunner.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because of its speed, when it was first introduced, few enemy aircraft could catch it level flight. A notable exception was the Nieuport 17 C.1<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>, which was introduced at almost the same time, and which was several miles per hour faster.
