Getuigenis van Carl August von Schoenebeck: In februari 1918 verliet ik von Richthofen en kreeg als 20-jarige de leiding over een eigen Jagdstaffel. Toen ik als zo jonge piloot al een zelfstandige bevelvoering overnam, had ik dat uitsluitend aan mijn vroegere leermeester Manfred von Richthofen, te danken. Bij het afscheid gaf hij mij nog enkele zeer ernstige raadgevingen mee. “De leider”, zo sprak hij, “is de aanleiding tot het succes van iedere Jagdstaffel. De bekwame piloten kunnen slechts dan tot hun recht komen, als hun leider hen correct daartoe aanzet.
