\u201cHet verslag van de commandant van zijn 73ste luchtoverwinning onthult het drama dat zich binnen een minuut voor zijn ogen ontvouwde: \u201dKort nadat ik mijn 72ste tegenstander in brand had geschoten, viel ik opnieuw aan met dezelfde mannen van het squadron, zag een Bristol Fighter een van mijn mannen aanvallen, ging achter hem staan en schoot hem vanaf 50 meter in brand. Ik realiseerde me dat er maar \u00e9\u00e9n inzittende was. De stoel van de waarnemer was vergrendeld en ik vermoed gevuld met bommen. Ik schoot eerst de piloot dood, het vliegtuig kwam vast te zitten in de propeller.
