Gisteravond heb ik het IJzeren Kruis ontvangen. Hoe gaat het met Lemberg? Ik geef je een advies: als de Russen komen, begraaf dan alles wat je nog terug wilt zien diep in de tuin of ergens anders. Wat je achterlaat, zie je nooit meer terug. Je verbaast je erover dat ik zoveel geld opzij zet, maar na de oorlog moet ik alles opnieuw aanschaffen. Wat ik heb meegenomen, is verloren gegaan \u2013 verbrand, door granaten verscheurd, enzovoort, inclusief mijn tuig.
