In andere opzichten was de D.H.5 volkomen conventioneel, met een met draad verstevigde houten structuur, een stoffen bekleding en een vast staartskid-landingsgestel. Het eerste exemplaar vloog eind 1916 en ondanks prestaties die aanzienlijk lager waren dan die van de toenmalige Pup, werd een order geplaatst voor 400 vliegtuigen, waarvan de eerste in mei 1917 in dienst werden genomen. Slechts vijf squadrons kregen dit type, waarvan de matige luchtgevechtscapaciteiten leidden tot een snelle degradatie naar de rol van grondaanvalsvliegtuig. Hier bleek de D.H. veel geschikter, en er werden nog eens 150 exemplaren besteld, hoewel niet alle exemplaren waren gebouwd voordat het type eind 1917 uit dienst werd genomen.
