De ondanks haar hoekige vormen goedgeproportioneerde S.E.5a was buitengewoon snel en vormde een zeer stabiel wapenplatform. Dit waren stuk voor stuk eigenschappen, die haar enigszins tekortschietende wendbaarheid weer compenseerden.
