Het prototype vloog in mei 1917 met een 149 kW (200 pk) Hispano-Suiza-motor met tandwielaandrijving, en dezelfde motor werd gebruikt in de Dolphin Mk I, die eind 1917 in dienst werd genomen. Problemen met de motor met tandwieloverbrenging leidden vervolgens tot de Dolphin Mk III met een versie van dezelfde motor met directe aandrijving, en de aanduiding Dolphin Mk II werd gebruikt voor een paar vliegtuigen met een 224 kW (300 pk) Hispano-Suiza-motor met directe aandrijving. In totaal werden er 1532 geproduceerd, maar slechts 621 werden geleverd aan operationele squadrons, die een hekel hadden aan de ongebruikelijke stall-eigenschappen van de Dolphin en de kwetsbaarheid van de piloot bij een neuslanding.
