Le G.II \u00e9tait g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement arm\u00e9 de trois mitrailleuses de 7,92 mm (.312 pouces) et de 200 kg (440 livres) de bombes. Le bombardier souffrait de probl\u00e8mes de stabilit\u00e9, et de nombreux G.II ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9quip\u00e9s de surfaces verticales suppl\u00e9mentaires de chaque c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la d\u00e9rive et du gouvernail afin d&rsquo;am\u00e9liorer les caract\u00e9ristiques de maniabilit\u00e9 en vol. Schubert et Gn\u00e4dig, en r\u00e9ponse aux derniers chasseurs alli\u00e9s, tels que le Nieuport 11 B\u00e9b\u00e9 et l&rsquo;Airco D.H.2, qui s&rsquo;\u00e9taient r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9s sup\u00e9rieurs au Fokker Eindecker et aux autres chasseurs allemands de la premi\u00e8re heure, et avaient \u00e9tabli une sup\u00e9riorit\u00e9 a\u00e9rienne g\u00e9n\u00e9rale des Alli\u00e9s. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 command\u00e9 en juin 1916 et mis en service dans les escadrons en ao\u00fbt de la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Le D.I avait un fuselage semi-monocoque en contreplaqu\u00e9, compos\u00e9 d&rsquo;une coque ext\u00e9rieure \u00e0 simple couche, soutenue par une structure interne minimale. Il \u00e9tait plus l\u00e9ger et plus r\u00e9sistant que le fuselage de type caisson recouvert de tissu alors couramment utilis\u00e9, tout en \u00e9tant plus facile \u00e0 fa\u00e7onner pour obtenir une forme a\u00e9rodynamique \u00e9pur\u00e9e. En m\u00eame temps, son rev\u00eatement en contreplaqu\u00e9, compos\u00e9 principalement de panneaux \u00e0 quatre c\u00f4t\u00e9s en contreplaqu\u00e9 mince recouvrant l&rsquo;ensemble de la structure minimale du fuselage, \u00e9tait moins laborieux (et donc moins co\u00fbteux \u00e0 fabriquer) qu&rsquo;une \u00ab v\u00e9ritable \u00bb structure monocoque. L&rsquo;Albatros D.I \u00e9tait propuls\u00e9 soit par un moteur Benz Bz.III de 110 kW (150 ch), soit par un moteur Mercedes D.III de 120 kW (160 ch) \u00e0 six cylindres en ligne refroidi par eau. La puissance suppl\u00e9mentaire du moteur Mercedes (Daimler) permettait d&rsquo;installer deux mitrailleuses Spandau fixes sans perte de performance.<\/p>\n<p>Le D.I avait une charge alaire relativement \u00e9lev\u00e9e pour l&rsquo;\u00e9poque et n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas particuli\u00e8rement maniable. En effet, malgr\u00e9 ses performances m\u00e9diocres et sa structure monoplan peu convaincante (d\u00e9riv\u00e9e de son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur non arm\u00e9, le M.5k), il \u00e9tait \u00e9quip\u00e9 d&rsquo;une mitrailleuse capable de tirer directement vers l&rsquo;avant \u00e0 travers le disque de l&rsquo;h\u00e9lice gr\u00e2ce au premier dispositif d&rsquo;interruption pratique au monde. Le E.I (peu construit) \u00e9tait sous-motoris\u00e9 et fut remplac\u00e9 par le E.II, plus puissant (23 exemplaires construits), puis par le E.III (entre 120 et 150 exemplaires construits), qui \u00e9tait \u00e9quip\u00e9 du m\u00eame moteur mais b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiait d&rsquo;un certain nombre d&rsquo;am\u00e9liorations. C&rsquo;est cet avion qui fut \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine du \u00ab fl\u00e9au Fokker \u00bb de 1915\/16, ces pauvres appareils l&#8217;emportant gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur armement et \u00e0 l&rsquo;habilet\u00e9 de leurs pilotes.
