Con\u00e7u par Reinhold Platz, le Dr.I \u00e9tait \u00e9quip\u00e9 d'un moteur rotatif, d'un fuselage en tubes d'acier et d'ailes pratiquement en porte-\u00e0-faux, de construction en bois et recouvertes de contreplaqu\u00e9 sur leur surface avant. Ce mod\u00e8le est entr\u00e9 en service en ao\u00fbt 1917 et 420 exemplaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 construits jusqu'en mai 1918, date \u00e0 laquelle ses faibles performances constituaient un handicap \u00e9vident pour tous les pilotes, sauf les plus comp\u00e9tents, qui effectuaient des sorties purement d\u00e9fensives.
