Ce mod\u00e8le fut surnomm\u00e9 Haifisch (requin) en raison de son fuselage profond auquel \u00e9tait directement fix\u00e9e une aile sup\u00e9rieure l\u00e9g\u00e8rement inclin\u00e9e. Le D.I effectua son premier vol en juillet 1916 et fut produit en petit nombre. La version d\u00e9finitive \u00e9tait le D.II, qui conservait le m\u00eame moteur Mercedes D.III de 119 kW (160 ch), mais qui pr\u00e9sentait un certain nombre de modifications visant \u00e0 r\u00e9duire la tra\u00een\u00e9e ainsi qu'un empennage modifi\u00e9. Le D.II entra en service au d\u00e9but de l'ann\u00e9e 1917 et fut compl\u00e9t\u00e9 par le D.IIa, \u00e9quip\u00e9 d'un moteur plus puissant. Les D.II et D.IIa n'\u00e9taient pas tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9s en service, les pilotes se plaignant du manque de visibilit\u00e9 et de la lourdeur des commandes. Le D.III pr\u00e9sentait un fuselage r\u00e9vis\u00e9 et moins profond, sur lequel la partie centrale de l'aile sup\u00e9rieure \u00e9tait soutenue par des haubans, mais seuls quelques exemplaires furent construits. Le seul prototype D.V avait une structure de fuselage plus raffin\u00e9e.
