Le Geschwader II effectua un long vol sans apercevoir un seul Anglais. Le Schwarm I d\u00e9colla \u00e0 10 heures et ne vit que quelques ballons d’observation stationn\u00e9s paisiblement \u00e0 basse altitude. Mais loin, tr\u00e8s loin au-del\u00e0 des lignes, il y avait beaucoup d’activit\u00e9 au-dessus des a\u00e9rodromes britanniques. On pouvait voir les Lords, individuellement et en petits groupes, tourner \u00e0 basse altitude, et aucun ne s’avan\u00e7ait. Nous nous attendions tous \u00e0 ce que Richthofen attende r\u00e9solument, peut-\u00eatre pendant des heures et jusqu’\u00e0 notre derni\u00e8re goutte de carburant, qu’ils s’approchent, car le temps \u00e9tait devenu magnifique et l’op\u00e9ration allait s\u00fbrement devoir commencer maintenant. Ce fut donc une grande surprise lorsque notre avion de t\u00eate fit soudainement un virage serr\u00e9 vers la base. Peut-\u00eatre avait-il des probl\u00e8mes de moteur ou n’avait-il pas vu les Anglais l\u00e0-bas. Je restai donc sur place avec deux autres pilotes. Mais Richthofen \u00e9tait de nouveau l\u00e0, tournant autour de nous et nous faisant clairement signe de rentrer \u00e0 la base. Il nous rassembla \u00e0 l’a\u00e9rodrome : \u00ab Messieurs, nous allons prendre dix minutes pour faire le plein. Dans moins d’une demi-heure, ce sera la guerre au front et je veux d\u00e9ployer un plus grand nombre d’avions.
