Franz Hemer, pilote dans la Jasta 6 du Jagdgeschwader I de septembre 1917 jusqu’\u00e0 la fin de la guerre, expliquait lors d’une longue conversation t\u00e9l\u00e9phonique avec Bruno Schm\u00e4ling en 1976 : \u00ab Richthofen \u00e9tait Rittmeister et commandant de Geschwader, mais aussi noble. Je n’\u00e9tais qu’un simple Vizefeldwebel. Cependant, il traitait tous les pilotes de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re, qu’ils soient officiers ou simples soldats. Le facteur d\u00e9cisif \u00e9tait leur performance en tant que pilote de chasse. Il n’y avait aucune diff\u00e9rence entre les grades, et nous, les sous-officiers pilotes, mangions et socialisions dans le mess des officiers.
