\u00ab En tant qu’observateur, je me sentais peut-\u00eatre tout \u00e0 fait \u00e0 ma place en tant que cavalier, car au bout de quinze jours, on m’envoyait d\u00e9j\u00e0 dehors, \u00e0 ma plus grande joie, dans le seul endroit o\u00f9 nous avions encore une guerre de mouvement, \u00e0 savoir en Russie. Mackensen \u00e9tait en train de triompher. Il avait fait une perc\u00e9e \u00e0 Gorlice, et je l’ai rejoint alors que nous prenions Rawa Ruska. Un jour au parc a\u00e9rien de l’arm\u00e9e, puis j’ai rejoint le fameux groupe 69 o\u00f9, en tant que d\u00e9butant, je me suis senti compl\u00e8tement idiot. Mon guide \u00e9tait un \u00ab canon \u00bb – le premier-lieutenant Zeumer -, d\u00e9j\u00e0 tordu et boiteux. De tous les autres, je suis aujourd’hui le seul \u00e0 \u00eatre encore en vie. C’est maintenant que je vis ma plus belle p\u00e9riode. Elle ressemblait beaucoup \u00e0 celle de la cavalerie. Tous les jours, le matin et l’apr\u00e8s-midi, je pouvais faire ma reconnaissance.
