Lors de la conception du D.H.5, destin\u00e9 \u00e0 le remplacer, avec un moteur tracteur et un canon interrompu, de Havilland choisit un d\u00e9calage vers l'arri\u00e8re des ailes afin d'offrir au pilote un champ de vision tout aussi bon. \u00c0 tous autres \u00e9gards, le D.H.5 \u00e9tait tout \u00e0 fait conventionnel, avec une structure en bois renforc\u00e9e par des haubans, un rev\u00eatement en tissu et un train d'atterrissage \u00e0 patin arri\u00e8re fixe. Le premier exemplaire vola \u00e0 la fin de 1916 et, malgr\u00e9 des performances nettement inf\u00e9rieures \u00e0 celles du Pup contemporain, une commande de 400 appareils fut pass\u00e9e, dont les premiers entr\u00e8rent en service en mai 1917. Seules cinq escadrilles re\u00e7urent ce type d'appareil, dont les capacit\u00e9s de combat a\u00e9rien m\u00e9diocres le rel\u00e9gu\u00e8rent rapidement au r\u00f4le d'attaque au sol. Le D.H. s'est av\u00e9r\u00e9 beaucoup plus adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 cette t\u00e2che, et 150 commandes suppl\u00e9mentaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pass\u00e9es, mais tous n'ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 construits avant le retrait de ce mod\u00e8le \u00e0 la fin de 1917.
