Sie verf\u00fcgte \u00fcber einen gut stromlinienf\u00f6rmigen, mit Sperrholz verkleideten Rumpf, Doppeldeckerfl\u00fcgel mit gleicher Sehne und einen Benz Bz. III- oder Mercedes D.III-Reihenmotor, dessen 112 oder 119 kW (150 oder 160 PS) den Einbau von zwei Kanonen erm\u00f6glichten, ohne die hohe Leistungsf\u00e4higkeit des Jagdflugzeugs wesentlich zu beeintr\u00e4chtigen. Der Typ wurde bald in Dienst gestellt und erwies sich in allen wichtigen Punkten als den aktuellen alliierten Jagdflugzeugen \u00fcberlegen. Der einzige Kritikpunkt an diesem Typ war die Position des oberen Fl\u00fcgels, die das Sichtfeld des Piloten nach oben beeintr\u00e4chtigte. Bei der endg\u00fcltigen Version D.II wurde der Fl\u00fcgel abgesenkt, der D.III-Motor standardisiert und bei sp\u00e4teren Flugzeugen wurden die Rumpf-Ohrk\u00fchler durch einen verkleideten K\u00fchler im mittleren Teil des oberen Fl\u00fcgels ersetzt.
