Das Ergebnis war die D.III, die den Rumpf und das Leitwerk der D.II beibehielt, aber mit einer Version des D.III-Motors mit h\u00f6herem Verdichtungsverh\u00e4ltnis f\u00fcr etwas mehr Leistung ausgestattet war und eine neue Fl\u00fcgelzelle ohne Versatz erhielt. Die Fl\u00fcgel bestanden aus einem l\u00e4ngeren Oberfl\u00fcgel mit gepfeilten Spitzen und einem schmalen Unterfl\u00fcgel in einer Sesquiplane-Anordnung mit V-f\u00f6rmigen Zwischenfl\u00fcgelstreben. Gleichzeitig wurde der K\u00fchler vom Mittelteil zum rechten Fl\u00fcgel verlegt, damit der Pilot bei einem Einschuss nicht verbr\u00fcht werden konnte. Die D.III wurde im Fr\u00fchjahr 1917 in Dienst gestellt und in gro\u00dfer St\u00fcckzahl produziert, sodass sie zwischen dieser Zeit und dem Herbst desselben Jahres zum entscheidenden Jagdflugzeug an der Westfront wurde.
