Weitere \u00c4nderungen waren eine weitere Verringerung der H\u00f6he des oberen Fl\u00fcgels \u00fcber dem Rumpf, ein \u00fcberarbeitetes Ruder, eine oft entfernte Kopfst\u00fctze f\u00fcr den Piloten und ein anderes Querruder-Steuersystem. Die D.V wurde im Mai 1917 in Dienst gestellt und bald darauf kam die D.Va hinzu, die wieder das obere Fl\u00fcgel- und Querruder-Steuersystem der D.III verwendete. Beide Varianten wurden in sehr gro\u00dfer St\u00fcckzahl produziert, aber das Design war veraltet und konnte mit den neuesten alliierten Kampfflugzeugen nicht mithalten. Der untere Fl\u00fcgel war au\u00dferdem schwach und neigte dazu, bei steilen Sturzfl\u00fcgen abzubrechen.
