In allen Bereichen des Luftkampfs zeigte er eine eher mittelm\u00e4\u00dfige Leistung, au\u00dfer beim Steigverm\u00f6gen und in der Wendigkeit, wo er fast schon legend\u00e4re F\u00e4higkeiten besa\u00df. Die Dr.I war vom Sopwith Triplane inspiriert, f\u00fchrte jedoch die Dreideckerformel auf die Spitze, indem sie die Fl\u00fcgelfl\u00e4che maximierte und gleichzeitig die Gesamtspannweite minimierte. Die von Reinhold Platz entworfene Dr.I hatte einen Rotationsmotor, einen Stahlrohrrumpf und praktisch freitragende Fl\u00fcgel aus Holz mit einer Sperrholzverkleidung auf der Vorderseite. Der Typ wurde im August 1917 in Dienst gestellt, und bis Mai 1918 wurden 420 Exemplare gebaut. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war seine geringe Leistungsf\u00e4higkeit ein deutlicher Nachteil in den H\u00e4nden aller au\u00dfer den f\u00e4higsten Piloten, die ausschlie\u00dflich defensive Eins\u00e4tze flogen.
