In anderer Hinsicht war die D.H.5 durch und durch konventionell, mit einer drahtverstrebten Holzkonstruktion, Stoffbespannung und festem Spornfahrwerk. Das erste Exemplar flog Ende 1916, und trotz einer deutlich geringeren Leistung als die der zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Pup wurde eine Bestellung \u00fcber 400 Flugzeuge aufgegeben, von denen die ersten im Mai 1917 in Dienst gestellt wurden. Nur f\u00fcnf Staffeln erhielten diesen Typ, dessen m\u00e4\u00dfige Luftkampftauglichkeit zu einer raschen Verlagerung auf die Bodenangriffsrolle f\u00fchrte. Hier erwies sich die D.H. als weitaus besser geeignet, und es wurden weitere 150 Exemplare bestellt, die jedoch nicht alle gebaut wurden, bevor der Typ Ende 1917 ausgemustert wurde.
